Celebrating the inspiration that is Mark Gonzales with yet another collaborative release, the studs adidas Gonz Superstar ADV pays homage to both the OG Superstar and the ‘65 debuting Stan Smith with its multifaceted, cross-genre design. Dubbed the ‘Most Influential Skateboarder of All Time’ by Transworld Skateboarding Magazine in 2011 and renowned for his appearances in edits such as ‘Psycho Skate’, studs adidas’ ‘Away Days’ and Supreme’s ‘Cherry’, California born skater-come-artist Mark Gonzales has continued to pioneer the ever evolving skate scene since he first stepped foot in it back in the ‘80s. Famed for his debut on the cover of Thrasher Magazine’s November ‘84 issue and for his ties to the likes of Krooked, Independent and the OG Blind Skateboards founded in partnership with Steve Rocco in ‘89, Mark Gonzales continues to remain a force to be reckoned with even to this day.
A play on studs adidas’ pants Trefoil emblem and triple stripe logo, Mark Gonzales’ best known art piece, the ‘Shmoo’ is an unidentifiable illustrative character said to be born from a desire to bring a little joy and happiness to the world. Known for his love of all things ungoverned and his appreciation for his bustling one-room studio hub in NYC, Mark Gonzales’ illustrious career is one that isn’t just tied to skate, but to creative illustrative collaborations with brands excluding the likes of Italian eyewear company Retrosuperfuture, Agenda Trade Show and the HVW8 Gallery in Los Angeles.
Effectively styled as the counterpart to the 2020 released cloud white and pastel toned colourway of the Gonz x studs adidas Superstar ADV that help celebrate the silhouette’s 50th anniversary the same year, the low top receives a core black revision in the form of the latest studs adidas Gonz Superstar ADV. Full-grain premium leather in a contrasting and striking shade of black pays homage to some of the brand’s most notorious silhouettes, whilst the retained Superstar shell toe and the perforated Stan Smith inspired 3-Stripe sidewall decals deliver an uplifted skate-centric wear that doesn’t detract from studs adidas’ pants street-wise charm. A full length cupsole stitch, tonal rubber outsole and a grippy underfoot midway combine for exemplary boardfeel and traction, with the cushioned and lined interior providing further support to suit. The recessed 7 eyelet lacing system secures the studs adidas Trefoil debossed tongue in place against the arch of the foot, with the pigskin nubuck Shmoo-foil character badges styled in mismatched sizes and neon-tinted colours as they replace their pastel counterparts from the 2020 cloud white silhouette across the lightly padded midfoot. Tonal stitched seams are in keeping with the after-dark aesthetic with a neon green printed insole bringing further characterised depth to yet another Gonz classic.
