The adidas Supernova Rise Brings Reliable Comfort to Every Run
adidas has been weaved throughout history supporting athletes on and off the field. They have a strong presence in the world of soccer but that is far from where their reach extends. If you look back, you’ll find them breaking barriers on the track, basketball court, tennis court, the list goes on.
adidas puts thought and care into all running-related products and we believe the Supernova Rise is a testament to that. When we heard about a new daily trainer from adidas, it had our curiosity. Upon hearing it would debut a brand new midsole foam, well, that had our attention.

adidas Originals debuted the Deerupt Runner earlier in the year | An In-Depth Look Into the Supernova Rise Tech:
The adidas Supernova Rise is the first of its kind so we don’t have a previous model to compare it to. Fortunately, there are plenty of other mid-cushion running shoes that we can use as a baseline.
Dreamstrike+ Midsole Foam
adidas has developed literal record-breaking midsole foams but that’s not where the story preto. adidas continues to innovate and move forward, not resting on its laurels. This is the first shoe featuring Dreamstrike+ and adidas made sure to deliver.
When you first slip on the Supernova Rise you’ll quickly realize this doesn’t feel like an adidas shoe you’ve tried before. Dreamstrike+ is denser than previous adidas midsole cushioning, giving this shoe a softer underfoot experience than recent models. What’s most impressive about this is its ability to do this at a fraction of the weight of Boost.
adidas Boost midsole foam was originally introduced in 2013 and has been fine-tuned over the years, balancing soft cushioning with responsive energy return well. Lightstrike Pro is featured in adidas super shoes and other high-performance trainers to offer optimal energy at a shockingly low weight. Dreamstrike+ foam brings together the softness from Boost and the lightweight energy return from Lightstrike Pro in the Supernova Rise.
Bottom-Loaded Support Rods
The adidas Supernova Rise is a neutral trainer but incorporates supportive aspects, most notably, the EVA-based Bottom-Loaded Support Rods.
We’ve seen a similar feature in the Adios Pro 3 with the carbon-infused Energy Rods, giving the racing shoe much-needed stability and increased energy return. The Supernova Rise uses this concept but applies it in such a way that it doesn’t compromise the softer cushioning that the Dreamstrike+ foam provides.
The Bottom-Loaded Support Rods forgo the carbon-infused rods and instead use an EVA-based foam to add a touch of support. With this design, the adidas Supernova Rise gets a boost in overall stability without losing its soft underfoot feel. This additional support offers stabilizing transitions without obstructing your natural footstrike
Adiwear Outsole
When you’re looking for a daily trainer, you’re looking for a durable running shoe that can stand the trials of miles. The Supernova Rise utilizes an Adiwear outsole to give you all the durability you need with additional traction for uncertain weather conditions.
One aspect we appreciated about the Supernova Rise outsole was the attention to detail adidas put into it. They concentrated the majority of the outsole material in higher-wear areas that runners tend to land or take off from. By focusing on these key areas, adidas can lower the overall weight without sacrificing durability. We would’ve loved to see a Continental rubber outsole but we’re willing to admit that the Adiwear outsole does get the job done as well.
The optimal outsole pattern for most adidas Marathon Μπουφάν will generally be flat, and the Adiwear outsole definitely falls into this category. While this could be taken on the occasional trail run, we’d look towards dedicated trail running shoes for anything more.
Engineered Sandwich Mesh Upper
A running shoe should feel comfortable in more ways than just the cushioning underfoot. For this reason, adidas built the Supernova Rise upper with an engineered sandwich mesh material.
This material uses multiple layers to create a three-dimensional structure between the outer layers, making it more breathable and lightweight than a standard upper. This unique construction also helps by adding additional support, comfortably wrapping and securing your foot.
How Does the Supernova Rise Fit?
We’ve generally enjoyed the fit of most adidas running shoes and the Supernova Rise continued this trend. These trainers generally ran true to size but some reviewers felt the mid/forefoot was a little snug, causing them to go up a half size. The majority of reviewers were unaffected but if you are in-between sizes, it may be worth it to go with the larger one.
The upper is made with the engineered sandwich mesh, offering a plush and lightweight fit around the foot and ankle. On top of the foot, you’ll notice a well-padded heel collar and tongue that helps increase overall comfort. This tongue is non-gusseted but avoids tongue migration with an incorporated loop for the laces to feed through.
The Road Test
This is undoubtedly the best part when it comes to experiencing new shoes: the road test. The all-new Dreamstrike+ midsole Aop the Supernova Rise to one of the top daily trainers on the market.
It’s clear adidas put extra care when considering the underfoot experience in this running shoe. The midsole feels soft with a little bounce, offering plenty of impact and shock absorption throughout your run. The bounciness is most noticeable as you toe-off, propelling you forward in a way that feels surprisingly natural.
Within the midsole are the Bottom-Loaded Support Rods designed to stabilize your transitions. These rods are EVA-based which helps them go unnoticed when feeling the cushioning underfoot. However, these rods have enough rigidity to create a snappy experience as you pick up the pace.
Distance runners will be happy to hear the Supernova Rise has so far stood the trials of miles, showing little wear thus far. The reviewer with the most mileage in this running shoe is up to 110 miles, and it’s safe to say there are plenty of runs left in them. Even with this much mileage, the outsole shows little wear and gives confidence for a long lifespan for this running shoe.
When compared to competitors such as the Brooks Ghost or the New Balance 880, the adidas Supernova Rise was able to hold its own. The Supernova Rise (9.8 oz) is slightly lighter than the Brooks Ghost (10.1 oz) with a noticeably more snappy ride and a comparable stack height. The New Balance 880 (9.5 oz) is slightly lighter but the Supernova Rise offers a whopping 9 mm more midsole foam underfoot.
Pros and Cons
PROS
- All-new Dreamstrike+ creates a unique and cushioned underfoot experience
- Bottom-Loaded Support Rods add snappiness to each step without sacrificing the soft cushioning
- The Adiwear outsole offers great traction and shows little wear after 100+ miles; this shoe can go the distance
- Comparable weight to similar daily trainers with above-average cushioning
- The engineered sandwich mesh upper is plush, yet breathable, comfortably wrapping the foot
CONS
- Not designed for wider feet, some reviewers needed to size up due to the snug mid/forefoot
It’s worth noting that sizing up was an option to alleviate the tighter fit around the mid/forefoot. However, we also realize this is not the ideal solution and potentially not an option for others.
