Nike Gym Elemental Fitness Handschoenen met tie-dye patroon in grijs Air Max family are one of the key models of kicks from the American brand Nike. After the presentation of the first, innovative shoes with a visible Air Max cushioning system under the heel in 1987 - the iconic Air Max 1 , the perception of sports footwear changed forever. In later years, this project was developed cyclically, and new 'Air Max's' appeared on the market practically every year. Only with time was the naming system systematized, which is still in use today and distinguishes such silhouettes as the previously mentioned Air Max 1, Air Max 180, Air Max 90 or Air Max 95 , Air Max 97 , and even Air Max 360. Every avid fan of sneakers surely knows some of them.

The Story Behind the Iconic DQM x Nike Air Max 90 'Bacon'

In the less than 35 years since the electrifying premiere of the first Air Max 1 designed by Tinker Hatfield, thousands of limited editions of sneakers with the iconic cushioning system under the heel have appeared on sale, including the limited DQM x Air Max 90 'Bacon' in 2004, the creation of which has an interesting story behind it. The unique sneakers debuted in a 'meat' concept called Dave's Quality Meat in 2004, a time when collaborative projects were really rare and made a lot of noise around themselves. The name DQM comes from a graffiti artist and owner of a unique space, Dave Ortiz, tagging under the pseudonym 'MEAT' , who once led a team in the skateboard brand Zoo York. Their office was located in an industrial district famous for meat packing in New York, hence the Dave's Quality Meat space resembled a butcher shop . Given the unique opportunity to design his own Air Max 90 colorway, Dave had only 3-4 months from the moment Nike approached him with the proposal to prepare a finished design. The beginnings were difficult, and Dave had no big problem with where to even begin. He delayed submitting the first sketches until the very last moment, until one Saturday he finally received an email saying , "Hey, if you want to make these shoes, the design has to be ready by Monday...".

Then, still without any idea for the Nike Air Max 90, he went to a Deli restaurant and ordered a dish consisting of bacon, eggs and cheese and suddenly something dawned on him. This was the breakthrough moment of the whole undertaking. Then Dave thought to himself, 'What if I designed shoes that looked like bacon? Everyone loves bacon!' and immediately after that he went to the store and bought three different packages of bacon. Dave, not even having a computer, went straight to his friend Tom, with whom for hours, together using the Pantone sample based on specific slices of previously purchased meat, they selected the colors that they would see on the sneakers. When they finished and sent their work to Nike, fears and doubts began to flow into their heads, whether this crazy project would even appeal to anyone? On Monday, Dave received a message back from Nike Creative Director Jessie Leyva with full approval of what he had done! Another success! The shoes were made of a combination of great quality natural, fleshy leather, suede and mesh in subdued beige, contrasting red, brown and pink as an addition. On the day of the premiere, there were maybe 15 people waiting in line, and the release did not make a big impression. Three or four years later, Dave surprised the world and released a restock of several hundred - 250 or 500 pairs stored in the warehouse and only then did it get really hot in front of the store. Despite the fact that the circulation of this edition was relatively large, it should be mentioned that DQM x Nike Air Max 90 in the 'Bacon' colorway also came out in an ultra-limited Hyperstrike version to only 48 pairs produced, differing from the regular one by a label sewn into the tongue, graphics on the insoles, a special box and hand-polished leather.
